Today, the United States celebrates Memorial Day, the national day of remembrance to honor American soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending the homeland and the values upon which the country stands: Freedom, sovereignty, and human dignity .
On this day, American cities pause, flags are lowered to half-mast, prayers are raised, and families with their new generation come forward to commemorate those who fell so that the homeland might live and principles remain steadfast. It is a moment of collective reflection and deep gratitude for those who bore the burden of battle and left behind a legacy of courage and loyalty
While we share this noble sentiment with Americans, we as members of the Syrian community in the United States cannot help but remember with pride and respect the thousands of Syrians who sacrificed their lives for Syria’s freedom and the dignity of its people.
Syrian sacrifices, whether on the battlefields of confrontation, in the prisons of oppression, or on the roads of displacement, are not merely scenes in a turbulent history, but a continuous voice in the nation’s conscience . They are a cry of hope, a testament of trust, and a renewed path toward a free, just, and sovereign Syria.
Geography and circumstances may differ, but the principle of sacrifice for dignity is what unites all free peoples.
May God have mercy on all martyrs, in every land, who died so their people might live with dignity
